Micro = Tiny
BlogSUP August 6, 2023Hi all:
Yesterday I listened to an Outside Magazine podcast about microadventuring. I haven’t finished listening, but the gist of it is, big, grand adventures are only for a few, but microadventures are for everyone. We don’t all have the time, finances, or even desire to launch into a massive and ultra-challenging adventure, but we all have a few hours to indulge in a local microadventure. I’m curious about microadventuring right in my own city (Portland). I have my classic dog walk routes and comfortable road bike routes, but what if I were to explore a part of the city untapped by me? I know it’s possible; it would just take a little time to research. Remember the East End and West End walks that the LAC has led over the years? These were small explorations of the city on streets some of us had never strolled before. If you have an idea of a microadventure, let me know and I’ll post ideas in next week’s email. We can also start a feed on the LAC facebook page to share inspiration for local microadventures. Here’s a website created by Alastair Humphrey’s who’s the guy interviewed in the Outside podcast and has a real passion for microadventuring (as well as macroadventuring; in 2012 he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean). If you click on the link, there are a bunch of microadventure FAQs that are fun to read.
We’ll be having our own microadventure on August 10th – an adventure on Peaks Island. We’ll take the 4:30 p.m. Casco Bay Lines ferry to Peaks Island, walk the island, and then we’ll order pizza at Il Leone (delicious wood-fired pizzas). There’s a return ferry at 7:45 p.m. and another at 8:45 p.m. I haven’t checked the weather, but if it’s thunder and lightning, we’ll cancel, but if it’s just a drizzle we’ll still head out.
Upcoming Community (not all LAC) Adventures – These are not LAC adventures (except for the ones that say, “LAC”). These are adventures we’re sharing that are put-on by other orgs. If you have ideas for the calendar or want to organize an LAC community adventure, please send me a note.
