I’m really excited to share that on Thursday, August 25th, we’ll all have an opportunity to venture over to Peaks Island, enjoy pizza from Il Leone and most excitingly hear from Leah Day author of Changing Gears. My friend Ann lent me this book recently and I LOVED it. It’s a story of a mother and son biking across the country together on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail. The book is beautifully written and full of humor and humanity. While reading it, I was struck by how brave Leah is and how she leapt into a pretty amazing and incredibly challenging adventure. Leah lives on Peaks with her family and after completing the bike ride, opened a bike shop in So. Portland called Lighthouse Bikes. Leah will share stories, photos, and maybe even her trip maps with us. She’ll also have books for sale (also for sale at Sherman’s, Longfellow Books, and at Lighthouse Bikes). If you’d like to join in this fun LAC adventure, take the 5:35 p.m. ferry over (or an earlier one if you’d like to have time to explore the island on your own). There’s a 7:45 p.m. and an 8:45 p.m. ferry back to the mainland. Arrive with enough time at the ferry terminal to find parking (always tricky in summer in Portland!) and buy your ticket. I’m not taking formal reservations, but I’d like an idea of how many people are coming, so please drop me an email if you plan on joining us. Also, Leah will be featured soon on NPR’s Marketplace. I’ll let you know when that drops.
