That extra oomph
AdventureBlogHikingSkating December 24, 2023Hike/Skate Spot
Hi all:
Yesterday I had a double header adventure: hike, skate, hike. Solid ice was tough to find, but we crossed our fingers and my hunch paid off. I highly recommend the Overset/Sanborn River Loop in the Greenwood area. Today we’ll see warm temps, I think, so the ice may not be great or safe, but hopefully it will come back if real winter ever arrives. And even if you can’t skate, the hike is full-on gorgeous.
One thing I was thinking about yesterday is how I love getting out, but I don’t always push myself to take it to the nth degree. I hiked in to the pond, skated and would have been happy to hike out, but my hiking/skating partner said, we can’t not summit that mountain behind us. It’s not that I was worried about the time, the daylight, my fitness… there was nothing significant urging me to turn back, just not the oomph to push on. But of course I did push on and we did hike up to the ridge and I was really glad we did. It was a beautiful hike with fabulous views of the pond we had skated moments ago. My legs were happy for the extra exercise, my lungs and heart were thrilled for the extra effort, and okay, I was psyched for the 10,000+ steps (I am goal oriented after all).
The lesson here is, push a bit, make the extra effort, see what is over that hill… it’s always worth it.

Happy adventuring,
